City of Murphy Arbor Day Volunteers Needed

volunteer-planting-trees-for-arbor-day-coloring-pages-600x329

On Saturday, November 5th, the City of Murphy is looking for volunteers to plant trees at Murphy Central Park at 550 North Murphy Road. The event runs from 10:00 a.m. until noon. All volunteers will be provided lunch by In-N-Out Burger at the end of the work session. Also, the first 150 volunteers will receive a T-shirt and ALL volunteers will receive a bulb to plant at home.

Did you know many of the beautiful trees around the Municipal Complex grounds and along the trails have been planted by volunteers? YOU can make a difference! Not only do the trees add beauty but they serve as natural air filters and they supply oxygen to our atmosphere. They also serve as shade for our residents as well as places for our wildlife to flourish.

You may register to volunteer here and all ages are welcome. Any children under the age of 16 need to make sure an adult is in tow:) Be sure to wear closed-toe shoes and bring your own gloves and shovel…if you have one.

If you have any questions about the City of Murphy, contact me at 972-689-8424 so I can help you!

Murphy businesses are the BEST!

img_7531

Murphy businesses are the best! A couple of weeks ago, Chi Zeta Omega Chapter, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.®, a life-long community service organization that I am member of, shipped 488 pounds of hygiene supplies to help the flood victims in Baton Rouge, LA. We asked local area dentists, Walmart Super Store, Target and hotels to donate to the cause and they all answered the call by contributing hundreds of supplies to our collection.

While my group had a plan for gathering donations, we didn’t anticipate the expense of getting the items to Louisiana. I brought all the heavy boxes to the Murphy UPS Store and then they gave me an unexpected surprise. After finding out what I was doing, Josh, an employee at the UPS Store, told me that he understood the hard work that it takes to organize a donation drive. He had worked for over a month with his church to help displaced families when the tornado hit the Rowlett and Garland areas last December. Guess what he did? He blessed us with a money-saving discount on shipping costs!

I knew Murphy was a great place to live, but I learned something new about the UPS store and Walmart Superstore through this effort. Murphy-ites are fortunate to dwell in a supportive community where our local businesses care.

In Need of Backpack Donations!

The Douglass Community Neighborhood Association in Plano is hosting a Youth Empowerment Summit this Sunday and they need your help! They are in desperate needs of backpacks for the 100+ students that are registered for the event. I have volunteered for this event for the past 13 years so it is something that is very dear to my heart!

The Empowerment Youth Summit features workshops about money management, self-esteem and “real life” issues. There is also a shopping boutique where kids can collect jeans, school supplies and backpacks. This is where we need your help!  If you would like to donate backpacks, the Plano drop off locations is:

Telecom Electric
1304 Capital Ave.
Plano, TX 75074
(Monday – Friday from 9am to 5pm)

The need for support of the young people is growing…any donations are much appreciated!

Thanks so much, Dawn Redmond

Success!

We had a successful Stiletto Walk this past weekend. The Chi Zeta Omega Chapter held it’s 4th annual walk benefiting the Alzheimer’s Association at Breckinridge Park in Richardson. We raised a total of $3,000.00! It was a morning full of high energy with exercise, massages, vendors on hand, information on Alzheimer and healthy snacks. I love serving in our community!

If you are ever interested in participating in any volunteer work around the Murphy/Plano area, feel free to contact me. I can help you find the perfect project to fit your needs!

#humbled

On January 6th, myself and other Ebby agents from across North Texas, assisted in cleaning up neighborhoods that were affected by the recent tornadoes. The devastation I saw will never leave me! I never thought in a million years that clients I once helped to find a home and start their dreams, I would have to one day help them pick up the pieces. This is an experience that humbled me to my core.

We called ourselves “Team Ebby!” We consisted of approximately 80 agents, as well as some staff from our affiliated Title and Mortgage companies. Some duties for clean-up included: removing broken glass, nails and shingles; removing fences and soiled carpet; walking the neighborhood to ask different homeowners what they need. Sometimes all they needed was a shoulder to cry on.

Operation Blessing International (Disaster Relief Services) is the non-profit organization that coordinated Team Ebby. Their main mission during a disaster is to supply meals, lodging, equipment, work order coordination and more. They are always in need of volunteers, so if you would like to learn more about them and possibly sign up to be a part of their team, then just click on this link: http://www.operationblessing.org/volunteer/.

Random Acts of Kindness

Even though Random Acts of Kindness week isn’t until February 14th, I wanted to go ahead and participate now! The truth is for years I have suffered from seasonal depression. But this year I have felt great. I believe that doing community service projects all year long has lifted my spirits. When I share and give to others, I feel better. You should try it too!

I got the idea to do Random Acts because a friend of mine’s daughter left her a note that said “These are all rinsed. Random acts of kindness.” Something little like helping with the dishes can make someone’s day. And remember, this is something the whole family can enjoy doing.

Need some ideas?
*Treat someone to fresh fruit
*Put gas in someone’s car
*Sing Christmas carols at a nursing home
*Buy something for the person in line behind you
*Rake your neighbor’s yard
*Cook a meal for someone
*Give warm clothes, shoes and boots to the homeless
*Renew a friendship
*Facebook message a genuine compliment to some friends
*Leave a nice server the biggest tip you can afford
*Talk to the shy person at the party
*Adopt a rescue pet
*Send a care package to a soldier
*Bring holiday sweets to work
*Help the stressed parent by babysitting one night
*Leave a whole bunch of pennies heads-up for kids to find on the sidewalk
*Go to your friend’s kid’s event
*Send dessert to another table
*Give away stuff for free on Craigslist
*Decorate for the holidays
*Give someone a book you think they would like
*Spread the goodness!

Don’t worry, I am going to complete many Random Acts of Kindness this month….and hopefully every month. Just today I was standing in line for the restroom and I let the lady behind me go before me.

I love scrolling through the internet to see what others have done. I have attached some of my favorites. Would you mind sharing with me different Random Acts of Kindness that you either gave or received?

As always, I am never too busy to take care of any of your real estate needs! Contact me anytime, especially during the holiday season. It would make me happy to help you!

AKA: an organization of lifelong service and sisterhood

For some, the sorority and fraternity life ends after college graduation. For me, the real benefits of sorority life began after graduation. I was initiated into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. (AKA) 26 years ago and I cherish my sorority membership today more than ever before. Most people think that my involvement is social and are surprised to learn how much community service is involved along with leadership and professional development. As the president of the Plano chapter, I am responsible for implementing the sorority’s program goals which include five program target areas: (1) Education Enrichment (2) Health Promotion (3) Family Strengthening (4) Environmental Ownership and (5) Global Impact.

On any given weekend you can see the members of the Plano chapter (also known as the Chi Zeta Omega Chapter or CZO) beautifying the playgrounds of Memorial Elementary School in East Plano or donating, along with 60,000 other AKAs, 1 million backpacks to students over the next four years. CZO offers mentoring ans scholarship opportunities for high school girls and boys through its A.S.C.E.N.D. program and Pearl&Ivy programs for girls. We also do various events to raise awareness of health issues along with our community partners National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), American Heart Association (AHA) and the Alzheimer’s Association. Further, we donate clothing and food to those in need locally and in Africa.

Additionally, the chapter works to raise awareness and funds for historically black colleges and universities, HBCU’s. Our beloved sorority was founded in 1908 on the campus of Howard University, a HBCU, so this a way giving back to institutions that afforded African Americans so much.

In between all of community service, we attend annual conferences that focus on leadership development and offer recognition for the hard work we do. We also have a little fun supporting the events of other civic and service organizations.

When you see me and my sorority sisters wearing pink and green, I hope that you now have an idea of why we are so proud to wear the letters AKA. Many of us have found life-long friendships through our membership. A line from our national hymn describes our sisterhood best – “We help each for we know there is no other like our sisterhood.”

Give Back This Holiday Season

In the summer of 2011, my friend Kelly and I joined Meals on Wheels as a community service project for our children. On my first delivery route, one of the clients handed me a card to thank me for delivering meals and shared with me that Meals on Wheels workers were often the only conversation she had each day. We have been servicing the route every since!

Every Friday, we deliver up to 25 meals to an independent living apartment complex in Rockwall for seniors. We have learned about their interesting past lives, families and health challenges. All of our clients happen to be single women so we even help them out if they need some simple tasks done around the house. Our kids still join us during the summer and on holidays.wpid-20140926_112621.jpg

My favorite memory to date was when all seven of our children (Kelly is the brave soul with five kids and I have two) joined us and we sang church hymns with one of the residents. She was so excited.

In addition to my work with Meals on Wheels, I volunteer at Minnie’s Food Pantry in Plano through the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Chi Zeta Omega Chapter where I am First Vice President. We usually provide food and services for over 300 families once a month. Our largest day is coming up on November 22 where we will provide Thanksgiving boxes to over a 1,000 families. It is amazing to be a part of something this special. If you and your family are interested in joining us on the 22nd, contact me and I will provide you with the details.

work2asthma hand outs

During this holiday season, there are many opportunities to work at food pantries or serve meals. The volunteer procedure varies for each organization and are usually listed on their websites. Here are a few opportunities:

Meals on Wheels – The Meals On Wheels Association of America is the oldest and largest membership organization supporting the national network of more than 5,000 Senior Nutrition Programs that operate in all 50 states and U.S. territories. The tireless work of these programs – supported by a dedicated army of 2 million volunteers – delivers a nutritious meal, a warm smile and a safety check that helps keep 2.5 million seniors healthy, safe and living independently in their own homes each year.

Minnie’s Food Pantry – Minnie’s Food Pantry is a 501 C3 charity in Collin County, Texas.  They provide healthy, nutritious food and red carpet treatment to every person they serve in the community.

Allen Food Pantry – The Allen Food Pantry is supported by the Allen Ministerial Alliance which is made up of Christian churches in the communities of Allen, Fairview and Lucas, Texas and operates as a strict non-profit organization that is 100% Volunteer based.

A Christian Food Pantry – A Christian Food Pantry & Thrift Store was opened in April 2011 to serve food-insecure people in Collin County. They are open 4 days a week and only serve Collin County families. By partnering with North Texas Food Bank, their food costs are 5 cents per meal. A $20 donation provides 400 meals, a $100 donation 2000 meals. They are not part of any church or organization, so they rely solely upon monetary donations and income from the thrift store to pay rent and other expenses.

Bridge Outreach – Now operating every Saturday, volunteers set up 250 chairs, food serving tables, a music system, and in the atmosphere of praise and worship the gospel is preached. Through the love of God, a full hot meal, clothing, hygiene products and bags of food are dispersed. Each month 1000+ hot meals are served, 600 hygiene bags are given out, and nearly 1000 items of clothing are given out.

So sign up for something! It is chicken soup for the soul!
